Here we will explore everything you need to get you started, with more detailed information below.
Safety
Ketamine is extremely safe to use, the only real risk when starting is doing too much and getting really disoriented. So take it slow if you’re not experienced and start small, gradually upping your dosage to find that “sweet spot”.
Which one to buy?
The first step is choosing which ketamine to buy. There are generally two types, and while each batch is unique, we can generally say that the R type is more sedative and relaxing, while the S type is more psychedelic and people often prefer it more for social experiences.
That being said, each person is unique, and it’s worth trying some of both to see which lands better with you.
Preparing your Ketamine
Ketamine comes in crystals that need to be crushed up before use. There are many ways to do this, but an easy one is to simply fold a piece of paper in half with the ketamine in the middle. Then put it on a hard surface, a large plate is a good idea to catch any pieces that may fly out the sides.
Use a spoon or another hard object to crush the ketamine while it’s sandwiched in between the pieces of paper. Then you can open the paper, mix it up, and then close the paper and crush again. Repeat this process until it’s a fairly fine powder.
Once crushed you can put it back in the bag, and use a credit card to scrape any remaining powder off the paper.
Consuming your Ketamine
The most common way of using Ketamine is to snort (insufflate) it. This is often preferred because it allows for a relatively quick onset (10-20 mins) so you can carefully ramp up to your desired dosage without accidentally doing too much.
It’s also fairly bio-available through this method, meaning your body absorbs more of it, and therefore less is wasted.
Some people have a stigma around snorting things, but it’s worth getting over as this method really is easy and straightforward. An alternative is to mix it in water and use it as a nasal spray. This method makes it a little less potent, but many people like it, and you can scroll down further for details on how to make a Ketamine nasal spray.

Preparing for your journey
Setting
Ketamine really opens you up and your environment is very much going to impact your experience. The two three factors that will really help create a good experience are having a relatively safe, clean, or organized space, nice lighting, and a good music playlist.
You want to prepare all these things before you start, so you can just relax intro the environment.
Space
Make sure your space is safe (no risk of someone dropping in unexpectedly), and generally clean and tidy. This will really help you relax and feel a sense of peace and calm on your journey.
Lighting
Lighting is really powerful during the ketamine experience. Have nice dim lighting, and candles or dim candle-like lights are perfect. Just be careful if using real candles, make sure there’s no risk of them getting knocked over and no risk of starting a fire if they burn all the way down.
Music
You can’t go wrong with soothing ambient music. Some popular choices are East Forest – Music for Mushrooms 1&2, and Jon Hopkins – Music for Psychedelic Therapy, but feel free to explore any music that you find relaxing.
What To Expect
At lighter doses, Ketmaine feels very similar to having a few drinks of alcohol. It relaxes you and loosens you up. As you do more, it can bring a deep sense of relief and rest, and also offer a more optimistic perspective on life.
There’s this sweet spot when it comes to dosage. It’s the heavier end, but not so heavy that you can’t move. Ketamine is an anesthetic, and a large dose will make you lose consciousness and be totally unable to move. Some refer to this as a “K-Hole” and some people really love it, but it can be scary and disorienting, especially if you’re new to ketamine.
You want to find that sweet spot where you’re deeply relaxed, where everything melts away and you feel a sense of freedom, but you can still move around if you need to.
If you’re doing it socially, you want to make sure you really know your dose and don’t accidentally do too much. Ketamine has become very popular in many scenes because it softens you up like alcohol, immerses you in music and can be fun to dance on, but doesn’t last too long and doesn’t result in a hangover like alcohol does.
It’s definitely best to get acquainted with Ketamine in a safe space first, and start with a very small dose and then ramp it up slowly to figure out how it impacts you and how sensitive you are to it.
How to take your Ketamine
Dosing
If you’re snorting it, you want to start with a very small amount. Think like a single raw uncooked lentil, or a small grain of uncooked rice. People will often use a key to scoop this small amount, called a bump. Just a little bit on the tip of a key.
It’s always better to do too little than too much. So start small. You will start feeling the effects in a few minutes, and should definitely be able to feel it nearly full force about 10-15 minutes after snorting.
So you can do a bit every 15-20 mins, ramping up until you reach your desired high.
Remember, Ketamine only lasts about an hour, depending on the dose, so even if you do too much and are higher than you intended, you’ll come down soon. Just breathe, relax, and do your best to enjoy the process.
Snorting/Insufflating
First check which nostril is the most clear, then breath out all your air first, then bring the bump of ketamine to your nostril (be sure not to breathe out when the bump is near your nostril as you may blow it away), then inhale with just slightly more force than normal, but not too much as you don’t want it to go down the back of your throat.
It’s common for some to go down the back of your throat, and that’s totally fine. It may not taste great but don’t worry about it. If it’s building up in your throat, you can spit, but it’s also fine to let it rest there a bit to make sure it absorbs. It’s a good idea to have a drink of water handy.
If both nasal passages are relatively clear, you can do a little in each, or alternate. It’s not a big deal. Even if a nostril is partially clogged, it will often still work fine, so long as it’s not fully clogged.
Getting Into More Detail
Safety
Ketamine is one of the safest recreational drugs. It is on the World Health list of essential medicines and one of the most widely used anesthetics (pain killers) in the world. In rural and developing countries it is often the only anesthetic they use for surgery.
It is used so widely due to it not affecting breathing or heart rate, making it extremely safe. Ketamine is administered medically to people of all ages, including young children, and also animals. When Ketamine is used recreationally, you are typically doing far less than would be used for surgery, making it extremely safe.
Ketamine does not kill brain cells, and in fact many studies have found that it promotes neurogenesis (the growth of new brain cells), meaning that it can actually be good for your brain.
Risks
Because too much Ketamine can cause you to lose consciousness, it is extremely dangerous to use in water as it can cause drowning. Never use Ketamine in a hot tub or pool or any body of water.
Ketamine can also be habit forming. This is because it is so relaxing to your nervous system. People struggling with anxiety, ADHD, depression, PTSD, and feelings of distress are more at risk for developing a habit as it can bring immediate relief from these symptoms.
In this sense it is similar to alcohol, although there is no hangover after ketamine use.
Regular heavy use can result in bladder and kidney damage. These effects are mostly reported in heavy daily users (over a gram every day) and rare for occasional users. People who use only on weekends, or who use less than a few grams a month, rarely report these negative health effects.
Effects
In lighter doses, Ketamine has similar effects to alcohol. It is relaxing, calming, and “floaty”. Many people prefer it to alcohol as it leaves no hangover and you sober up more quickly, so you can use it socially and then be completely sober at the end of the night.
In stronger doses it can be very psychedelic and euphoric. People can hallucinate and have powerful spiritual experiences. It can make you feel more connected to other people and the world in general.
In high doses you can go into what’s commonly called a “k-hole”. This is where you lose all sense of your body and are unable or barely able to move. If you accidentally do too much this can be very disorienting and scary. Trust that you are safe and the effects will begin to wear off within an hour.
On the other hand, many people love the experiences of these high doses and find the experience beautiful and therapeutic. Just make sure you’re in a safe space.
On the negative side, Ketamine can cause nausea. This can be especially bad if mixed with alcohol or other nauseating drugs. For many people the nausea is not too bad, but some people are especially sensitive and may even vomit.
Some people may also find it difficult to sleep after ketamine use. These effects usually wear off after a few hours.
Types
The vast majority of Ketamine produced through history is technically known as Racemic Ketamine, which consists of two types of Ketamine molecules that are mirror images of one another, known as S-Ketamine (esketamine) and R-Ketamine (arketamine).
In more recent years, people have learned to isolate and produce pure S-Ketamine. Although pure R-Ketamine technically can be produced, this is almost never done so as it is far more difficult to isolate the R molecule.
What is commonly referred to as R-Ketamine is actually Racemic Ketamine, which is a relative balance of S and R. Going forward when we refer to R-Ketamine, know that we are actually referring to traditional Ketamine which is a mix of S and R (eskatamine and arketamine).
S-Ketamine (Esketamine)
S-Ketamine is generally considered to be more psychedelic than R-Ketamine. For this reason it is often preferred by psychonauts and festival goers. The high is considered to be lighter than R-Ketamine, and some people report less feelings of nausea.
R-Ketamine (Racemic or traditional Ketamine)
R-Ketamine is generally considered to be a heavier of a high, where it may be more difficult to function socially. Studies that compare the use of the two types for depression show mixed results. Sometimes the results are the same, sometimes one type performs better, but there doesn’t seem to be any consistency.
Overall, it seems that different people respond differently to different types. For this reason, it is recommended to try both and see what lands with you the best.
Administration
Insufflation
The vast majority of recreational Ketamine users prefer insufflation (snorting). This is partly because of the ease of use and there is also more bioavailability compared to the oral lozenges that are sometimes used medically (meaning snorting is more efficient as you absorb more).
Dosage: Below is a rough guideline for dosage. Don’t worry if you don’t have a scale and are inexperienced, simply start with a very small amount, like the size of a small grain of rice or a peppercorn amount, then wait 15-20 mins and notice the effects.
Note that doing just a little too much can be very disorienting. Be very careful when measuring your dose, it’s always safer to be cautious and start lighter until you can roughly gauge the potency.
It’s also nice to slowly ramp up the experience over time, as larger doses can come on very strong and be very disorienting. It is strongly advised to remain cautious about dosing until you really learn how it affects you.
Note that dosage varies per individual, these are only rough guidelines and some individuals will be far more sensitive.
Insufflated / Nasal Ketamine Dosages
Threshold 10 – 15 mg
Light 15 – 30 mg
Common 30 – 75 mg
Strong 60 – 125 mg
The K Hole 100 – 250 mg
Onset : 5 – 15 minutes
Duration : 45 – 60 minutes
Normal After Effects : 1 – 3 hours
Nasal Spray
Some people prefer to dissolve their ketamine into a nasal spray and use it that way. This makes it more discreet to use in public (a common strategy at music festivals), and also easier to ramp up your experience in small doses, making it far less likely to accidentally do too much and end up in a K-hole at an undesired time.
You can find nasal spray bottles on Amazon at affordable prices. For the carrier liquid, simply use spring water or distilled water with a tiny pinch of sea salt. Your nasal passages are actually more welcoming of salt water, helping them to not get agitated. Too much salt will agitate though, so don’t overdo it.
You can also buy salt water or saline solution specifically for nasal rinse (Hydrasense and Salinex are two common brands), but making your own solution is cheaper and works just as well.
Another thing people will sometimes do is use an emptied out allergy nasal spray bottle instead of a generic one. This is simply to help avoid any public scrutiny of using an unlabelled bottle. Just be careful not to let anyone else use it accidentally thinking it’s allergy nasal spray. Also beware that not all allergy spray bottles open and reseal easily.
Dosage: A good starting dose would be to add 0.5g to 1g of Ketamine per 10 ml of water. That would mean 1.5 to 3g of Ketamine for a 30 ml bottle, depending on how strong you like it. Adding a small pinch of sea salt helps to avoid congestion (mixing it up to roughly the same content as sea water). Mix it up well (by shaking) before you start to spray, to make sure it’s all dissolved and doesn’t clog the tube.
Boofing / Rectal Administration
Although far less common, many people swear by rectal administration aka boofing. You basically dissolve the ketamine into water and then use an oral syringe (without a needle) to put it into your rectum. Because of the blood vessels there the onset is very quick.
You can find more details on how to boof online by searching. Just be very careful with your dosage as it can come on stronger this way, so start small.
Using Ketamine Therapeutically
Getting the most out of a therapeutic Ketamine experience depends on a number of factors. There is first the intention and preparation, the environment you set up, and then also getting the most beneficial dosage, and frequency of sessions.
Intention and Preparation
It’s helpful to get clear on your intention before starting your session. You can write it down and journal about it, or even take time to pray, putting your intention out there into the world.
You want to make sure your space feels good, so tidying up is important.
You can also prepare an altar, which really helps to feel a good energy during the experience. You can put plants or flowers on the altar, along with incense, candles, and any items or photos that are beautiful or personally meaningful.
People will often also put a glass of water on their altar (filled to the brim), which can also look beautiful refracting the candle light.
Candles make for a very beautiful setting, but be very careful they are set up safely and won’t get knocked over. It’s not uncommon to get clumsy with movement when on high doses, so be very careful if using candles and make sure they are out of reach and won’t cause any issues even if a table is accidentally knocked over.
Lighting is very important, and if you don’t feel safe using candles, try to find some other form of beautiful dim lighting.
The other important thing is having good music. You want the playlist to be fully prepared beforehand, as you don’t want to be fumbling around on your phone. Here are some playlists that we recommend:
(East Forest – Music for Mushrooms 1&2, Jon Hopkins – Music for Psychedelic Therapy)
Feel free to make your own playlist. Most people find soothing ambient music to work best, and find that lyrics can be distracting.
Make sure you have a comfortable place to lie down. You want to be as relaxed as possible.
It’s also helpful to have food ready or easy to prepare for after, as you may be hungry after the session.
Dosage
It has been found through studies that there’s a sweet spot in the dosage to gain the therapeutic benefits of Ketamine. It is on the stronger side, but not so strong that one totally loses consciousness. At this dose there is a very strong effect, and may be on the precipice of a K-Hole.
You essentially want to get to the point where you are very disoriented, but still able to move if you need to. You want to close your eyes and go internal, not having to worry about the environment around you.
The actual amount of Ketamine to get you to this sweet spot is unique to each person, so best to start with a small dose and continue small doses again every 15-20 mins until you find the sweet spot.
Mindset
Your mindset should be just to relax and let go as deeply as you can. Just surrender to the experience as fully as you can. There may be times of confusion or disorientation, and you want your attitude to be OK and accepting of this, knowing it will pass.
Frequency of Use: A common therapeutic treatment will consist of 4-8 Ketamine sessions over the period of 2-6 weeks. Different providers do this differently. You can do 1-3 sessions for the first two weeks, and then 1 session each week for a few follow up weeks.
Studies have found that treatment is most effective when doing multiple sessions like this. Again, each person is unique, depending on the severity of their symptoms and reaction to the treatments.
Using Ketamine Socially
Ketamine has become extremely popular in party scenes worldwide because of its euphoric effects and minimal negative side effects. It’s best to try it out at least once in a safe space before doing it at an event to feel the effects and also get to know your dosage.
Always start small and work your way up as you really don’t want to do too much in a social setting.
Ketamine can mix well with other psychedelics but it can greatly amplify their effects, so be careful when mixing. If mixing with other drugs, it’s best to do a lower dose of each. Never do ketamine when drunk as it will amplify the nausea, which isn’t fun.
